Tortola, British Virgin Islands,- Cable & Wireless, the world's leading integrated provider in small and medium sized economies, unveiled plans to offer new low-cost international calling to customers in British Virgin Islands: NetSpeak, a high-speed Internet telephony service using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology. The service is being offered on a trial basis to selected customers today and when fully introduced, the rollout in the BVI will follow successful launches of NetSpeak in the Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Barbados, St Lucia, and St Kitts. Full Service will be available upon receipt of government approval.

Exclusive Service to USVI and Puerto Rico
NetSpeak service in the BVI will have unique and exclusive components that provides for unlimited calls to the USVI and Puerto Rico that no other company offers.Customers will be able to choose an area code from the US, Canada or UK, as their home phone number. This means friends and family living in that same area code, can phone NetSpeak Caribbean customers as if they were making a local call

Free Calls
Cable & Wireless is providing customers the opportunity to understand and experience the quality and ease-of-use for themselves.

Customers can make free phone calls at Cable & Wireless' Road Town Office and the BVI Music Fest for 3 minutes.

"We know that many of our customers have family and friends abroad, with whom they want to keep in touch - but that the cost of calling can be a barrier to communication. NetSpeak uses emerging technology to help people keep in touch, for less money" explained Vance Lewis, CE Cable & Wireless, in the BVI.

NetSpeak, allowing unlimited calls and even more customer choice, upon government approval, will be priced at a low monthly flat rate.

VoIP technology has taken the world by storm in North America and Europe. In fact, international technology consulting firm Frost & Sullivan estimates that Internet telephony will account for approximately 75% of world voice services by 2007 (Frost & Sullivan, 3/2002.)

Cable & Wireless is proud to offer a VoIP product that is robust when compared to global standards. NetSpeak offers features that are unrivalled in the Caribbean:
  • NetSpeak customers who travel with their NetSpeak phone adapter can receive calls anywhere in the world, with no additional charges from Cable & Wireless
  • Voice Mail, Caller ID and Call Waiting are benefits of NetSpeak at no additional cost.
  • Importantly, NetSpeak is the only broadband telephony product in the region that supports calls to emergency and info numbers (such as 911/999) -- numbers which many customers already use and depend upon.
  • The NetSpeak service is easy to manage. Subscribers enjoy unlimited calling to USVI, Puerto Rico, the US, Canada, and the UK. Convenient, online account management features allow customers to access their voice
  • As a longstanding provider of telephony services to the Caribbean, with sales and support services on the ground in 12 countries in the region, Cable & Wireless is able to provide hands-on, local customer service and support to NetSpeak customers.
Speaking about the success of NetSpeak, George Lewis, VP IT, said, "NetSpeak has been popular with audiences in the Cayman Islands, Barbados, Jamaica and elsewhere in the Eastern Caribbean, where it launched in recent months. We look forward to replicating our success in this market to enable our customers in British Virgin Islands to have the latest communication innovations"Lewis further explained, "It is obviously exciting for us to be able to offer dramatically less expensive voice calling to our customers. But it is also important because it signals that penetration of internet services in the BVI and the Caribbean is significant enough to support this next evolution of service for our high speed Internet customers. This is encouraging news for Cable & Wireless as we work to help Caribbean people to cross the digital divide.

As high-speed Internet penetration increases in the Caribbean, Cable & Wireless is working to provide cutting-edge services such as Internet voice calling to support the continually evolving communication requirements of the region.
